Explore the Basilica Cistern in Istanbul

Built in the sixth century under Emperor Justinian to store water for the city, the Basilica Cistern is a hall of marble columns rising from shallow water beneath the streets of Sultanahmet. Walk the raised walkways among the lit columns and find the two Medusa heads, reused as column bases, in its far corner.

All three stand within a few minutes’ walk of one another in Sultanahmet.
